LAW ENFORCEMENT
The Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement Office of the County. As such, he is responsible for the safety and security of the inhabitants of Ulster County. The Sheriff's law enforcement responsibilities are further categorized into law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice, crime prevention, court security, and civil process.Ulster County is mostly rural, covering an area of approximately 1,150 square miles. In order to provide professional law enforcement services to 165,000 citizens, and countless visitors, the Sheriff's Office employs over 150 full and part-time law enforcement, corrections and civilian members.

Benefits vary for job title, however, generally all members receive some or all of the following benefits.
Paid Vacation - Employees receive vacation after their first year of serviceCareer development begins at the time of appointmentPaid Personal / Military / Bereavement Leave / Holidays - Employees are awarded 4 or 5 depending on division, persona days annually. There are currently 14 paid holidays. Military leave is provided pursuant to regulation. 3 consecutive bereavement leave days are used as necessary.
Paid Sick Leave - Sick leave accrues at a rate of one day per month and can accumulate over time.
Health Insurance - Insurance is provided through the county with little cost to the employee.
Uniform Allowance - Uniforms are issued by the Sheriff’s Office and are maintained by the employee. In return, a yearly uniform allowance is provided.
Retirement Plan - Criminal and Correction Personnel are covered under the New York State Retirement System for Sheriff's Office personnel. Clerical workers are covered under the standard New York State Retirement System.
Members of the Ulster County Sheriff's Office have opportunities for career advancement by taking Civil Service promotional exams periodically for the supervisory positions of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain and may be assigned to special fields or details. Special Requirements for Deputy Sheriff
Must meet physical standards as prescribed by the Municipal Police Training Council
Must not have been convicted of a felony
Must possess a driver's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
Must be eligible for a certificate of training issued by the Executive Director of the Municipal Police Training Council
