County of Ulster, Kingston, New York
The Sheriff's Office

Training Unit

As an accredited agency, member training is recognized as an important facet of the Sheriff’s Office responsibility and receives increased emphasis and effort.  Administrated by a sergeant, the continual training program is comprised of two elements, an ongoing in house in-service training cycle, and the search for outside applicable training courses or seminars.

Each member of the Sheriff’s Office receives a minimum of 24 hours in service training each year consisting of topics which range from firearms proficiency and use of force training, to legal issues and sexual harassment in the workplace.

Many members of the administrative and patrol force have been trained by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services as specialized instruction and general police topics instructors and serve as in-service training instructors in addition to their regular duties.

At years end, members of the Administrative Division formulate a curriculum of in service training to be presented the upcoming year.  Pertinent topics and mandated instruction are scheduled in six week cycles where the particular subject matter is presented one day each week for six weeks until all division members have been scheduled to attend.  Notices are forwarded to all area local police agencies inviting them to attend any or all courses of instruction of interest.

There are currently eight tenured members who have been certified as Field Training Officers.  These members receive Deputy Sheriff recruits who have graduated from the NYS BMP basic law enforcement academy and guide them for a period of up to six weeks through the practical application of their new found abilities.

Outside training is sought and provided regularly when topics and need are relevant and support the mission of the Office.

As a co-sponsor of the regional Bureau for Municipal Police basic law enforcement training academy, and the host to any area local police agency which chooses to attend our in-service training cycles, Ulster County Deputy Sheriff’s provide competent instruction on contemporary and essential law enforcement issues.
